Kaipara Flats today # 1

Jean210 advises us that he Northern Microlight Club held a pre-Christmas fly-in at Kaipara Flats on 17 December, an anniversary day (brothers Wright in 1903) that provided benign skies and fair winds.

Centered in and around the hangar of Tim Harrison’s Sports Aircraft New Zealand, 28 aircraft arrived by midday in an effort to secure freshly baked scones provided by Darran and Liz Price.
Above we see the Kaipara Flats apron.
James Schmidt  trundles along in the De Havilland DH82A Tiger Moth ZK-CCQ (c/n DHNZ132).
As can be seen from its c/n it was built by De Havilland New Zealand.
It went into service with the RNZAF as NZ1452 in November of 1942 and was sold off to Tulloch Transport in August 1956 but was not registered until 13-09-1962 with P Smith, P G Whetton, A M Caudwell and R Etheridge of Blenheim. I believe it went to the sole ownership of R M Caudwell in the mid-60's and I next have it with Bindon, Philips and Tapp, from February 1968, who operated as Waikato Flying School.
Hallett M Griffin and M R Dellow of Palmerston North took it over from 09-03-1972 - followed by Hallett Griffin on his own from May 1974.
Then we see it with Nev Worsley of White Island Airways of Rotorua from late January of 1986.
Current owner Jim Schmidt appears in the papers from 30-07-1987.
The C.U.C. Syndicate has operated the Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee C ZK-CUC (c/n 28-4257) since May of 1995 and have named it 'Chue Wunda' which can be seen on the fuselage just forward of he lower door.
She first flew in NZ on 20-12-1967 before being sent over to the Tauranga Aero Club.
They sent it on to Arthur Smith Engineering Ltd at Whangarei from 19-04-1979 before it passed to James Aviation Ltd in June 1981. They off course on sold it quickly to R E Meyers and L W Johns of Whangarei the following month. From there it joined the C.U.C.Syndicate.

And three more pics from Kaipara Flats today from Jean210.
Robinson R44 Raven II ZK-INC (c/n 10940) came onto the register on 28-02-2006 with Keith Sinclair at Heli Cam Aviation Ltd and was toted as the 'ENG' model - ie. Electronic News Gathering.
In August 2011 it shifted over to Coptahire Ltd of Silverdale and then on 11-04-2013 was listed with Silver Fern Helicopters Ltd - also of Silverdale.
It wears small 'Operated by Silver Fern Helicopter' script below the passengers door.
Aviat A-1B Husky ZK-RBC2 (c/n 2418) was built in 2007 as N266MA and after owners in Texas and Florida came onto the ZK register on 29-07-2016 with H and R Alexander Family Trust of Matakana.
This Husky was briefly mentioned previously  HERE
Our first (and only so far) Aeroprakt A-32 ZK-WCB is c/n 10 which came onto the register for Foxbat Enterprises Ltd of Pukekohe on 02-05-16. "WCB" being the initials of Warren C Butler who along with Sonja are the Company directors.

Richard Currie dropped in on Ardmore today and has provided these three photographs.
The Robinson R44 Raven I ZK-IWV (c/n 0184) was sourced from Japan and became ZK-HES3 to Rotor Flite N.Z. Ltd on 29-04-2003 and moved over to Action Helicopters Ltd of Upper Moutere from 17-09-2003.
It became one of the Helipro/Rick Lucas Helicopters fleet on 30-07-2005 and following their demise it joined many others at Heliflite Pacific Ltd from 01-07-2015.
Its current owner Chris Hanley of Whitford took it on from 26-04-2016 and it was re-registered to ZK-IWV a month later.
The Partenavia P68B VH-PNY (c/n 70) arrived in NZ on 15-12-1976 and did a NZ tour in March of 1977 before becoming ZK-LAL with Lakeland Aviation Ltd at Taupo on 13-12-1977.
At least ten owner/operators later we see it with Air Charter Manawatu/Flight Training Manawatu Ltd from 22-09-2000 with a change to its current operator Aerial Surveys Ltd from 01-11-2013.
Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk ZK-WAC2 (c/n 38-82A0086) was a pre-loved example that arrived from the States to become ZK-WAH from 13-12-1990 with the Waitemata Aero Club.
After a brief spell with the Auckland Aero Club (Inc) from mid-November 1999 it went to Helicare Services Ltd at Nelson from 13-07-2000.
They passed it on to the Wellington Flying Centre Ltd from 18-02-2002.
On 26-02-2002 it was re-registered as ZK-WAC and listed with the Wellington Aero Club (Inc) - with whom its is still listed - although it looks decidedly un Wellington Aero Clubish in this shot.
And just the one from Pauanui today.
Robinson R44 Raven II ZK-HSU2 (c/n 10992) has been with Advanced Flight Ltd since 12-10-2015.

Way back on 10 February 1977 a PA 28-151 Cherokee Warrior (c/n 287715223) was registered as ZK-EBW  Over the years this aircraft has been re-registered an impressive seven times - ZK-MAI2,  ZK-ZEE,  ZK-CGD3,  ZK-RJM,  ZK-TGF and it is still current as ZK-DBW2.  I reckon this must be the record for the most number of registrations worn by one aircraft in New Zealand - can anyone provide more?.  Flyernzl has posted an excellent post on the aircraft's  interesting history at: http://nzcivair.blogspot.co.nz/2012/11/a-cherokee-of-many-colours.html  (except as ZK-DBW2 which occurred subsequently to the post).  ZK-DBW2 is photo'd below at Rangiora on 18/12/16.  The colours are a hangover from its time with the Coastguard as ZK-CGD3.

Of interest in the above rambling is the registration ZK-TGF (for North Shore owners TGF Aviation with the TGF standing for The Goat Factory), which was cancelled on 2/12/15.  It is photo'd below at Ashburton on 20/7/11.

Of interest in the above rambling is the registration ZK-TGF (for North Shore owners TGF Aviation with the TGF standing for The Goat Factory), which was cancelled on 2/12/15.  It is photo'd above at Ashburton on 20/7/11.

Meanwhile back at The Goat Factory, TGF Aviation had purchased another flasher Cherokee, this time a PA 28R-210T Arrow III ZK-REC which they purchased on 24/8/15.  This is photo'd above at North Shore on 12.3/16.

Which brings us around the bushes to the latest ZK-TGF2, which was re-registered from ZK-REC on 14/4/16 and is photo'd below at North Shore yesterday, on 17/12/16.

Confused?  Blame it on the re-registration regulations!

Te Kowhai Yesterday 20-12-2016

It was a fabulously fine day for flying at Te Kowhai yesterday, with a bit of bumpiness thrown in from thermals.  The fine weather also bought some other sport aircraft out into the sun and some of the other hangars were opened up.

The Te Kowhai airstrip has now been re-opened to its full length and a lot of maintenance work is being done by the new owners.  The place looked very picturesque.

The Waikato countryside from Jodel D 18 ZK-JAC4

then back for refuelling.

Stuart Parker did some circuits in his Poorboy PB-1 ZK-BEE2.

Jabiru powered Bantam ZK-SAK with nice backlight through the covering.

It was the first time I had seen Arion Aircraft Lightning UL ZK-TDT (c/n 46), and it has not been posted on the blog before.  It is a very smooth looking aircraft.

The Wisnewski Family Trust's lovely Stinson 108-3 (c/n 108-3752) ZK-NCC was parked up at Te Kowhai on Tuesday, departing later in the day.  It can be seen that it is ex NC752C.

This could be back in time.

The aircraft is badged as a Flying Station Wagon.

Very nice!

Indefatigable roving correspondent Richard Currie was at Thames last Tuesday (when I was also in the Waikato), and he has sent the following photos of interest:

Locally owned Cessna C 210G ZK-DCA2 was out in the sun.

While access to one of the hangars produced the following locally based aircraft: (all three of which have not been posted on the blog previously)

 Foxcon Terrier 200 ZK-EEN2

 Micro Aviation B 22 Bantam ZK-JAE.

and Tecnam P 96 Golf ZK-SVT.

New Mitsubishi MU 2 Air Ambulance at Hamilton 20-12-2016

While Richard Currie was doing Thames, I departed Te Kowhai for Otorohanga on my own medivac mission to pick up injured grandson (on crutches).  So it happened that we had to drive past Hamilton Airport on our way back to Auckland!

While photographing various aircraft, said grandson told me that a fluorescent lime green black striped aircraft had taxied past.  What the hey?  It turned out to be Search and Rescue Ltd Taupo's new Mitsubishi MU-2B-60 ZK-PSR (c/n 1569SA) operating as a Westpac Air Ambulance.  This aircraft has only been registered in New Zealand since 1/6/16 and its previous identities are N696CM, N222HH and N502MA.

Taxying for Runway 18

and take off to points South.

More from Hamilton on 20-12-2016

There were quite a few interesting aircraft around the aero club area when I visited:

Morane Saulnier MS 885 Super Rallye ZK-CDF (c/n 5248) is now owned by HTH Davison of Culverden so it is a long way from home.  It was also noted at Hamilton last Christmas.  This is a real oldie, having been first registered in December 1962 which makes it 54 years old!

And another aircraft of similar vintage was Aero Commander 680F ZK-CDK (c/n 680F-1289-132).  Following the demise of NZ Aerial Mapping this aircraft is now owned by Telomeres Aviation Ltd of Havelock North, and it still has all of its aerial photography gear fitted.

Partenavia P-68B ZK-ZSP is the ex New Plymouth Aero Club example but it has been owned by Taxlaw Ltd of Hamilton since November 2015.

I was told that the Waikato Aero Club has been rebranded as Waikato Aviation - "The Academy for the Ambitious".  This and their logo can be seen on their Alpha R2160s ZK-WKF (c/n 160A-06002), ZK-WJH (c/n 160A-06003)and ZK-WCD2(c/n 160A-07008).

And as part of their fleet rationalisation they are selling their two Tecnam P2008s on Trade Me.  I was told that these aircraft were not suitable for all year round training in all weathers.

Said Tecnams are:  ZK-WNZ (c/n 071)

and ZK-WIP (c/n 060).

I wouldn't usually take a photo of a plane that is all covered up but Piper PA 34-200T Seneca ZK-TSD (c/n 34-8070356 and ex ZK-DCQ) was so neatly covered with matching colours that I thought it was an impressive sight.  It is owned by Willis Management Structures Ltd of Hamilton.

Pauanui This Week

Richard Currie has been back on the case at Pauanui this week and has captured the following aircraft of note:

Rockwell 114 ZK-JHL (c/n 14263) is owned by Jabatus Holdings Ltd of Whangarei.  This aircraft was originally VH-DRT and was first registered as ZK-JHL on 16/1/96.  On 15/4/14 it was de-registered and reverted to VH-DRT.  Then on 4/3/16 it was again registered as ZK-JHL.  It has not been posted on the blog previously.

Tecnam Astore ZK-AST2 (c/n 015) from North Shore.

SG Aviation Storm 300 ZK-ULT (c/n NZ001) from Tuakau.

Cessna 172N ZK-TJL (c/n 17269575) from Hamilton

and another much older straight tail C 172 - ZK-EHA2(c/n 36748), also owned in Hamilton but based at Te Kowhai.

A long way from home is Cessna R182 ZK-MRG (c/n R18201738), all the way from Wanaka.

Finally a shot of Stark Airlines Gippsland GA 8 Airvan ZK-FSR2 (c/n GA8-06-099) just because it is so photogenic at Pauanui.

Ponder this then.

Ponder this during your Christmas scoff.
What is it ?
What type of aircraft would you find it on ?
Where on this aircraft was it mounted ?
Then tell me what aircraft type/model it is on.
And to cap it all off - give me a likely ZK registration for this aircraft.

Merry Christmas all.
Thanks for following us during the year.

Interesting arrivals at Pauanui on Christmas Eve included the following aircraft:

Vans RV 6A ZK-VIA (c/n 23401) of the VIA Syndicate, from Te Kowhai.

Cessna 172R ZK-WAM2 (c/n 17280275) from the Waikato Aero Club, with their new logo and Go Beyond script.

Aerospatiale AS 355 F1 Twin Squirrel ZK-HYJ2(c/n 5280) now of Heliflite Pacific Ltd of Auckland.

Recent fling wings at Christchurch # 1

Here we have five shots of fling wings that I have snapped during the past few days at Christchurch International.
The South Pacific Helicopters (2016) Ltd's Bell 206 JetRanger ZK-HBO2 (c/n 570) wisely chose a grotty day (23-12-2016) to drop in at Heli Maintenance for some attention.
An earlier HBO post can be seen Here
Outside in the rain at Heli Maintenance was the Hiller FH-1100 ZK-HCI (c/n 74) of Winged Hunters Ltd of Springfield on its long legs.
Previously seen Here
Over the other side of the field at Garden City Helicopters the Ellesmere Helicopters Ltd's Robinson R44 Astro ZK-HKH3 (c/n 0577) was parked.
Christchurch Helicopters 2001 Ltd's Aerospatiale AS 350 BA ZK-HOQ3 (c/n 1912) returns with another load from Kaikoura.
And the latest Aerospatiale AS 350 Squirrel for Christchurch Helicopters 2001 Ltd is ZK-HPQ (c/n 1420) seen here lifting off on 20-12-2016 in the new Company scheme.
This was originally ZK-HYW2 from February 1995 until re-registered on 23-09-2016.

Outside Heli Maintenance in the rain on the 23rd was the Bell 206B JetRanger ZK-HQR (c/n 1644) of John McVicar of Ohoka - still boldly wearing its Skywork Helicopters scheme.

A recent listing is the Guimbal Cabri G2 ZK-IAF2 (1159) with Ototara Trust of Auckland - just clearing the fences at Christchurch Helicopters facility at Christchurch.
One that I almost missed against the background at the Garden City Helicopters base was the Aerospatiale AS 355 F1 ZK-HPZ2 (c/n 5107) of Heliflite Ltd.
The script on the cargo pod says 'Mt Cook Glacier Guiding New Zealand' and the one on the nose says''Mount Cook Ski Planes and Helicopters by Inflite'.

This photograph show ZK-BMJ (c/n B.102) in the tree after Keith Christie parked it there on 08-05-1961.
Adam Christie has kindly supplied the photograph.
Keith was Adam's fathers uncle - who was the brother of Vic Christie.
