AeroAndina Aircraft - ZK-RTT and ZK-RTZ

Back on 4 February 2015, two AeroAndina aircraft were registered to Pan Tam Holdings of Papakura.  I was intrigued as to what these aircraft were so I did a bit of digging which led me to Wess Ruijne who imported the aircraft, and who was very helpful with information and photos.  Thanks Wess.

ZK-RTT (c.n AA-11-13-105-003) is registered as a MXP 1050 but Wess told me it is a MXP 850 Tumaco.  This is a STOL aircraft that derives its lineage from the Zenith CH 701 via the MXP 740 Savannah which was designed by Maximo Tedesco (who is the founder of AeroAndina).  Wess advises that this aircraft is for sale on Trade Me.

ZK-RTZ (c/n AA-02-14-15-056) is a MXP 150 Kimbaya.

Both of these aircraft are based at Wess's strip at Pukekawa, South of Auckland.

Allan Bowman popped out to Ashburton to check on his Rans ZK-AJB and snapped these fine pics for us.
Restoration appears to be proceeding at full steam. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
The Sydiving Kiwis Cessna 180A ZK-BUQ at full noise - away to check the conditions.
Making "The Call". The South Canterbury Aero Club's Piper PA-38-112 ZK-JHO just clear of the fuel pump.
Above we see the David Leefe Alpi Aviation Pioneer 200 ZK-PYS - down from NZRT.

And one we don't see a lot of is the, normally Hanmer Springs based, Tim Bygate Tiger Hawk ZK-THK (c/n 1). It was first flown back on 07-09-2001.
Parked overnight by the looks of things, with the snow having slid off the wings onto the ground.

I remember when.

As a result of the recent post on ZK-HLE at:-
I have received this photo taken by Alan Stratford in the mid 1990's near the same Hamilton hut showing the same team at work.
Staring in the above pic are Pete Mason with back towards us.
Playing to the camera is "Blue Bus" in the offending overalls, with Alan Bond checking the rear door.
Great days with great memories.

Aerobatic Machines at Ardmore Today 10-8-2015

A pleasant trip to Ardmore today with early New Zealand aircraft photographer Neville Drake produced the usual crop of interesting aircraft.  If you stay around long enough there is always something to photograph and today was no exception.

The first group was several dedicated aerobatic monoplanes, all having a connection to Doug Brooker.

Doug's latest aerobatic mount is the MX Aircraft ZK-MXS2 which had been flying earlier in the day but was in its hangar when I was there.  It is a single seater built by MX Aircraft in North Carolina, and its roll rate is (a potentially mind blowing) 420 degrees per second.  It is powered by a Lycoming IO 540 engine which gives an impressive top speed of around 230 knots (over 420 km per hour!).  The racing version of the MXS is flown by several pilots in the Red Bull Air Race series.

Doug's original aerobatic monoplane is the Akrotech G-202 ZK-NUT , now owned by The Great Stunt Company of Papakura.

And Doug was out flying his MX Aircraft MX 2 ZK-MXT2  The MX 2 was developed from the G-202.  It has the same engine as the MXS (Lycoming IO 540) but it is a two seater.  Doug told me the aircraft is for sale and may be heading overseas.

Doug fires up for another flight...

And taxies out.

Like I said, impressive.

Really Historical - Waco UIC ZK-ADE Over Wellington

In my previous post I mentioned that I was at Ardmore with Neville Drake - he didn't take the photo below but it is part of his collection.

This amazing photo shows not only the Waco but an incredible amount of detail of Wellington including the old Rongotai aerodrome in the background.  The photo is undated but must have been taken between 1934 and 1939.

I offer you these two photographs as nicked from CMM's shoe box collection.
Taken in the 1970's and probably in the North Canterbury region.

Sad Sights at Ardmore 10-8-2015

The sad result of the tornado that struck Ardmore on 18 July can still be seen at the airport.  The following threee badly damaged aircraft are/were all owned by the Auckland Aero Club.

Cessna C 162 Skycatcher ZK-VCG has bad damage to the tail.

Cessna C 162 Skycatcher ZK-AMN2 has bad damage to the wings and other areas.

And Cessna C 172N Skyhawk ZK-JAZ is much more damaged than a first glance shows with wing, fuselage and tail damage.  Check out the bent wing strut.

I understand that all three aircraft are likely to be written off, although ZK-VCG might be repaired.

Another photo from the Neville Drake collection is this iconic Whites Aviation photo.

It shows Rearwin 9000KR Sportster ZK-AKF flying over the Auckland Aero Club at Mangere aerodrome, with a large number of aircraft below - I counted fifteen of them.

Classic Taildraggers at Ardmore 10-8-2015

While we were at Ardmore yesterday, Peter Fahey pushed the Isaacs Fury ZK-DMN out of the Taildragger Classics hangar and started it up for a flight.

It still looks great 39 years after Barry Thompson built it.

Peter taxiing out, showing the upper wing and elevator markings.

The neat thing was that to get ZK-DMN out, he had to push out two other recently registered aircraft:  Piper PA 18-150 Cub ZK-BKD2 of the BKD Syndicate of Auckland.

And Piper PA 22-135 Pacer ZK-PAL3 of Ardmore Taildraggers Ltd.

Another Spitfire at Avspecs 10-8-2015

With Spitfire Mk XIV ZK-XIV now completed, Avspecs have another Spitfire well on the way to completion.

I was advised that this aircraft is a Mk XVI, with the RAF serial Number TB252.  It is being restored for Tony Banta of Livermore, CA and the projected completion is sometime in 2016.

TB 252 was displayed as a gate guardian at several RAF stations between 1955 and 1988, when it went to Historic Flying Ltd for restoration and was registered G-XVIE.  However the restoration did not progress far and it was cancelled from the UK civil register in March 2001.  The project was purchased by Tony Banta in July 2002 and registered N7252B and was then shipped to Avspecs, so it has been here for quite some time.

2016 is shaping up to be a big year for the "Best of British" - it is not that far away!

Two That Will be Flying Soon at Ardmore - 10-8-2015

A couple of interesting sports aircraft were at Ardmore on Monday. Both are making progress and we will see them flying in the near or medium term future.

Cassutt Racer ZK-DHJ has made good progress since my last post on this machine, with the fuselage now covered and a trial fitting of the engine was being carried out.  The wings are still in the original colours but the aircraft is going be repainted in a snazzy racing scheme.

And this is the Titan Mustang that has been registered ZK-WZY since my last post on it.  It is in the paint shop receiving an overall silver coat, and it will be painted in the colours of a Mustang named "Big Beautiful Doll" which had black and white checkers on the engine cowling and represents one of the several Mustangs flown by Colonel John Landers based at Duxford in the UK.  It has been built by Pioneer Aero for an Australian owner.

Sir Minty posted a couple of shots recently of the Isaac Fury ZK-DMN
This has prompted Andrew Phillpott to send in these three shots of him flying said ZK-DMN.
The photographs were taken by Maurice Benner on May 9th 1987.
Below we see Bruce Lynch leading in the Tiger ZK-AUE.
Camera aircraft was flown by Dean Hanna.

A earlier coverage of all the NZ Fury's can be seen at :-

Diamond DA 42 Twinstar at Ardmore - 10-8-2015

Ardmore just keeps on giving! ( I am nearly finished).

The distinctive shape of Eagle Flight Training's new Diamond DA 42 Twinstar ZK-DAX2 caught my eye for some long shots.  The aircraft was only registered on 25/5/15 and is ex N422DK, built in 2007.

In this angle you can better see (one of) the Thielert 2.0 litre "Centurion"diesel engines.  I guess that from many aspects you wouldn't be able to mistake it!

The Maule M-9-235C VH-VRF (c/n 36001C) arrived at Christchurch and tied down on the western grass near the Aero Club just on CET on Wednesday.
Tony McFarlin caught it this morning just before it departed.
It is expected to join the NZ civil register in due course.
This Maule was noted at Paraparaumu previously. See:-

Really Really Historical - Supermarine Channel II G-NZAI at Wellington

This really nice photo of the Supermarine Channel II flying boat G-NZAI is scanned from the Neville Drake collection (although he didn't take it!).  The date would have been in the 1920's and the location is Wellington Harbour.

Very early aircraft registrations in New Zealand were in the G-NZxx series, which predated the ZK-xxx series that we still use today.

This Supermarine Channel II flying boat G-NZAI was first registered to the New Zealand Flying School at Kohimarama on 28/2/22 and later was purchased by the New Zealand Government on 1/9/24.  I do not know the date of the photo or the photographer, but I guess it is a famous photo - can anyone advise any more details?

Posing nicely in the sun at Ardmore was Barrier Air's new Cessna C208B Grand Caravan ZK-SDB.

It commenced its first scheduled services the next day, 11/8/15, from Auckland International to Kaitaia and return, and later to Great Barrier Island and return.

Hairy Mole Rat was active at Tauranga yesterday and captured the Tim Bygate Special ZK-THK.
It was noted back on the 8th in the snow at Ashburton (apparently now based at Nelson).
Down from Parakai was the Harvie Lockie Dyn 'Aero MCR01 Club ZK-WIK. (which is c/n 342).
**************
Meanwhile down country today (Friday 14th) the Blue Bus caught the Garden City Helicopters Kawasaki BK117-B2 ZK-HJC3 (c/n 1061) lifting off and about to depart Christchurch for points west (another Ski Field pick up).
In the background is B-2 ZK-HGU5 which was finally listed to Garden City last Monday having been with them since earlier in the year.
Out at Rangiora the Europa ZK-SBZ (c/n 240) was out in the bitter elements.
And the CRAC Rans S-6 "Oscar Rabbit" was thrashing the circuit.

A Couple of Colourful Helos at Ardmore 10-8-15

My final post from Ardmore for a while as I will be overseas for 3 months.

These two colourful helicopters were outside the Airbus Helicopters facility on Monday, and offer a comparason between two similar Eurocopter designs.

ZK-HPV5 is a Eurocopter EC 130-T2 model which was registered on 3/12/14 to the Sir Peter Vela Family Trust  of Hamilton (hence the horses on the tail).

ZK-HTV3 is a Eurocopter EC 120B owned by Heletranz Ltd and it is normally based at their heliport at North Shore.  It has been around for quie a while  as it was first registered here on 7/5/02.
