I went up to North Shore this afternoon to catch up with Gordon Lindsay and his new Starlet.

ZK-YGL (for Yvonne and Gordon Lindsay) has been a 30 year labour of love.  Gordon was doing the weight and balance today helped by Don Wilkinson (ZK-TOY) and UK Starlet builder Steve Stride (G-ILSE).

Ian Williams flew up from Drury in the Hoffman Dimona motorglider ZK-GCB2.

While local Bolkow Junior ZK-CJL of the Bryant/Worley Syndicate had an engine run.

A few metres away at the Heli Maintenance facility the Bell 206B JetRanger II ZK-HTO (c/n 2265) also departed briefly out west. This workhorse has a build date of 24-10-1977 and migrated to NZ for Kitto Helicopters at Balclutha from 18-07-1984. In my previous post on Stoddard Hamilton Glastars of New Zealand (http://nzcivair.blogspot.co.nz/2016/08/stoddard-hamilton-glastars-of-new.html ), I noted that Geoffrey New of the UK had emigrated to New Zealand and bought his Glastar G-BYEK with him.  It was registered to him at Tauranga as ZK-NEW4 on 17/5/04, but I had never seen a photo of it as such.  In my post I asked if anyone knew if it had flown in New Zealand as ZK-NEW4.

Dave Bates has now kindly sent in a photo of it with its New Zealand registration applied, taken at Tauranga on 25/6/04, so I think it is likely that it flew here as ZK-NEW4.  It was cancelled from the New Zealand Civil register after only four months, on 5/9/04, and reverted back to G-BYEK.

  ZK-NEW4 at Tauranga on 25/6/04.

I have gone back to my original post and added the photo of ZK-NEW4, and also the recently registered Glastar ZK-CDP2.

When I was last at Ardmore, a couple of weeks ago, I came across S.N.C.A.N Stampe SV 4A ZK-BBV2 (c/n 199) in Rob Mackley's hangar.  I had not seen this classic aircraft previously so it was good to have a look at it.

The registration as the second ZK-BBV comes from its previous French registration of F-BBVM, which it had worn since 12/11/46.  It was imported into New Zealand by Lars Fehlman and first registered here on 22/7/11.

Sadly, Lars Fellman died recently and his aircraft have been advertised for sale.  The Stampe is advertised for sale in the latest Classic Wings magazine.

You can see a full rundown of ZK-BBV2's interesting history in an earlier post at http://nzcivair.blogspot.co.nz/2015/05/stampe-sv4a-zk-bbv.html

Blue Bus is on the prowl around the North of the South.
This first batch of photographs were taken at Kaikoura on 03-11-2016.
A recent start up operator on the Kaikoura Airfield is South Pacific Helicopters (2016) Ltd who operate the Bell 206B JetRanger ZK-HBO (c/n 570) under the South Pacific Whale Watch banner.
This JetRanger has operated from Kaikoura several time before with other operators.
Part of the flight package is a hilltop landing. Above we see ZK-HBO atop Rakanui Hill - as seen from the Airfield.
Wings Over Whales operate this Gippsland GA8 ZK-KBZ (c/n GA8 -03-024) along with a Cessna 172 ZK-EKE.
A third operator is the Kaikoura Aero Club (Inc).
Above is their recently delivered Aeropro EuroFox 32K TOW ZK-TUG (c/n 382130).
And below we have the Cessna 150M ZK-DNY (c/n 15075789).
The Club also have listed the Piper PA-28-180 Archer ZK-DUQ and the Piper PA-32-300 Cherokee Six ZK-DOP.

Bushby Mustang II(s) of New Zealand

The next type of homebuilt aircraft to be registered here was the Bushby Mustang II.

After John Bushby bought the rights to the Midget Mustang design in 1959, he started to develop a two seat version which appeared in 1966 as the Mustang II.  The Mustang II is of riveted aluminium construction and can be constructed as a tri gear or taildragger aircraft.  The obvious comparison is with the Vans RV 6 or 7 which are of similar size and layout.  In a fly off with similar engines reported by AOPA the Mustang II was faster with its tapered wing, while the RVs have constant chord wings and better low speed performance which results in the Mustang II landing faster and quite a bit longer.  Of course the RV's have a track record of thousands built while there have been around 500 Mustang IIs built worldwide.

The Mustang IIs length is 5.94 metres (19 feet  6 inches), its wingspan is 7.37 metres (24 feet 2 inches) with the wing area being 97 square feet.  Empty weight is around 450 Kg (1,000 pounds) and in New Zealand, MAUW is 725 Kg (1,600 pounds).  The Mustang II can be powered by engines in the 160 HP to 200 HP range.  With a 160 HP O-320 the top speed is around 230 mph which is fast.

We have had one Mustang II built in New Zealand, ZK-CAR (c/n 1713) which was built by John and Trish Crawford of Christchurch and was first registered to them on 9/12/02.  It is powered by a Lycoming O-320 and was a six and a half year project.  I understand that the CAR stands for Coke And Rum.  ZK-CAR is photo'd above at the 2009 SAANZ flyin at Ashburton on 7/2/09.

And again at the 2013 SAANZ flyin, also at Ashburton on 9/2/13.

I think there is at least one other Mustang II being built in New Zealand, but we won't see lots of them.

Photographed recently in the leading Edge Aviation hangar at Parakai, is the TAG Aviation Titanium Explorer Gyrocopter ZK-RBZ.  Thanks to Brendyn Pilcher of the Whangarei Flying Club for the photo.  It was first registered in to Gyrate Auckland Ltd on 13/9/16.

TAG Aviation Pty Ltd was formed by Neil Sheather and Andrew Pepper in Australia in 2009.  Neil was formerly the Australian agent for the Spanish ELA autogyros (of which we have 3 in New Zealand) and he has designed an improved aircraft based on the ELA autogyro.  The main structure of the Explorer is made from titanium, which is a first for a gyrocopter, and the carbon fibre and fibreglass body has sidepods for storage.  Power comes from a Rotax 912 and the propellor is a 6 bladed unit.

A quick look at Omaka found these helicopters.
KHI Kawasaki-Bell 47G3B-KH4 ZK-HPG3 (c/n 2082). This is an ex Royal Thai Air Force machine from 1966, which came into NZ after about seventeen years in Australia. It is registered to Cliff Marchant.

Hughes 369E ZK-IDS (C/n 0232E). Hard to believe but this real tidy looking helicopter is coming up to thirty years old. It had its airworthiness test at Mesa, Arizona on 11-05-1987.
It was acquired by David Satchwell of Channelview, Texas on 24-10-2008 and came to NZ to become ZK-IDS with his Bay Ventures NZ Ltd at Napier from 30-03-2011.
It is now Omaka based with Precision Helicopters Ltd.

The 2016 Black Sands flyin was held at Raglan over the past weekend.  This popular event for sport aircraft is organised by the Waikato Thames Valley Chapter of SAANZ led by Bruce Cooke, and marks the beginning of the summer season flyins around the country.  This year the tides precluded the usual beach landing on the black sands of Coopers Beach, however I understand that the tides will again be favourable for beach landings next year.

Unfortunately the weather was not totally cooperative this year, but in excess of 70 aircraft attended the flyin over the three days.  Thanks to Dave Homewood, I now post the following photos from Raglan.

An evocative shot as the sun sets on Friday.

Passing through on Friday for a touch and go was Stoddard-Hamilton Glasair III ZK-MKP2.  This aircraft has been owned by the BOP Marine Life Trust of Tauranga since 10/4/15 and sports a new colour scheme, with its old scheme being shown below at Black Sands 2009.

Alan Falconer flies in from Te Awamutu in his nice TEAM Hi Max ZK-KCM.

Aeroprakt A-22LS ZK-LFK is registered to the Aeroprakt agents, Lite Flight Green of Pukehohe.  it has been on the register since 8/3/16.  Lite Flight Green also had their demonstrator A-32 ZK-WCB on the field.

Neil McHugh of Hamilton flew his newly completed just Aircraft Highlander ZK-MCQ3 over from Te Kowhai.  It was first registered on 6/7/16.

A real oldie was Taylor Monoplane ZK-DQG which was flown in from Ardmore.  It is owned by Bryan McAnulty of Manakau and has been on the register since April 1975!

Finally, a view of the visiting aircraft under the iconic Raglan tree line on the Saturday.

Thanks must go to Bruce Cooke and the members of the Waikato Thames Valley Chapter of SAANZ for putting on another successful Black Sands flyin.

I know that Q300's fly in and out of Kapiti but I have never been there to see it. This flight, ZK-NEK, was an Auckland round trip, only on the ground for twenty minutes. There were a few people on board when it arrived but it left empty! Not a good way to make money.
