Fixed wingers at Nelson. Twins.

A couple of visits to Nelson Airport on the 7th and 8th of November netted these twins.
Two real tidy looking Cessna 402B's were noted in the Originair hangar.
Above is ZK-MAP2 c/n 402B1056 as listed with Aerial Mapping Ltd and carrying their titles.
Below is ZK-PVC c/n 402B0559 as listed to Total Entertainments Consultants Ltd.
Then there was the Tasman Aviation Ltd's Beech B200GT ZK-VMF (c/n BY-57).
Its a hard one to get a good angle on and still catch the registration.

Above we see the Australian registered airways calibration aircraft VH-PFQ
This Garrett TPE331 powered Piper PA-42 1000 Cheyenne 400LS is c/n 42-5527015 which tells us that it was once on the NZ register as ZK-RUR between 1996 and 2008.

NZ Warbirds Armistice Day Open Day at Ardmore

The New Zealand Warbirds are hosting their next Open Day at Ardmore on Sunday.  In a new direction for NZ Warbirds, they will be displaying their latest acquisition a BE 2 aircraft purchased from The Vintage Aviator Ltd.

The poster for the show accurately shows their "new"BE 2 which is registered as ZK-PXA being flown by Gene De Marco of TVAL..  This was registered to The Vintage Aviator on 17/5/16.  The aircraft is painted to represent Aircraft 687 of the RFC which was the aircraft that William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse won the first Royal Flying Corps Victoria Cross for his actions in dropping a 45 Kg bomb from low level on the railway facilities at Cambrai in Northern France on 26 April 1916.  He was badly injured by rifle fire and his aircraft was damaged by his own bomb, but he made it back to his home airfield at Merville some 35 miles away, where he reported the success of his mission.  Sadly he died of his wounds the next day and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

That is an inspiring story of bravery, but the aircraft is not a true replica of the aircraft that Rhodes-Moorhouse flew that day.  ZK-PXA is a faithful replica of a BE 2e wheras the original 687 was a BE 2b which was a much earlier version of the BE 2.  However, congratulations are due to the NZ Warbirds for widening their collection of warbirds across the ages.  I see they have also recently purchased the 3/4 scale Isaacs Fury ZK-DMN which is representative of yet another era.

The NZ Warbirds are also reported as having purchased a TVAL Albatros, and I am interested to see which one it is or if it is a new build.  If the poster is accurate it could be the original TVAL Albatros D VA ZK-DVA.

A Piper Navajo that has not appeared on this blog before, has been sitting at North Shore airfield for the past few months.  It must have the equal most boring colour scheme of any local aircraft.

Cessna 172 ZK-DFI is c/n 17260172 and is listed with Black Robins Airlines of Wellington.
It is certainly not making a lot of money sitting here.
Looking like it may well be weather bound was the Piper PA-28-161 ZK-DXI (c/n 28-8016132) of the North Shore Aero Club Inc.
And certainly earthbound for the moment was the Cessna A152 Aerobat ZK-ELC (c/n A1520787) of NZICPA of Feilding.
Weather bound from Paraparaumu was the Cessna 172S ZK-KAL (c/n 172S10305) from the Kapiti District Aero Club (Inc).

After dropping off duties at Auckland International this afternoon, Kiwi Air's geophysical surveying PAC 750XL ZK-FNZ (c/n 102) arrived out of the murk.

Taxying in, note the extended tailboom.

and being marshalled to a parking spot outside Air Centre One.

It has spent much of its life overseas on survey work.

I am not sure if it was coming or going but it was probably going because it did not appear to clear customs.

Herd of Mustangs?

Also at Auckland International on 12-11-2016 were a couple of Mustangs of the Cessna 510 variety.  These aircraft have been posted on the blog previously, but it was quite neat to see two of them together, and they have both recently acquired new owners.

ZK-LCA (c/n 510-011) has been registered to GESL Aviation Holdings Ltd of Hastings since 6/9/16.

While ZK-JAK2 (c/n 510-0347) has been registered to JAK Air of Rotorua since 5/9/16.  Here they are both parked outside the Air Centre One facility at the Eastern end of the aoirport.

We currently have four Cessna 510 Citation Mustangs on the register in New Zealand, with the other two being  ZK-RJZ and ZK-YDZ.

And now its off to Ardmore.

Warbirds Armistice Day Airshow at Ardmore - V12s

As I posted recently, the NZ Warbirds hosted an Armistice Day airshow at Ardmore today, 13/11 16.  The weather largely co-operated although there was quite a bit of cloud.  Most of the the usual warbirds machines flew displays, but the most ear tingling were the two V 12s:  F 51  Mustang ZK-TAF and Tr9 Spitfire ZK-WDQ.

Nice!

It was great to see the Catalina ZK-PBY/NZ4017 back on the airshow scene.  It was pretty busy during the day and flew some spirited display flights, quite remarkable for a big aircraft.

It is now named "The Wandering Witch"

Also very nice!

Warbirds Armistice Day Airshow at Ardmore - the Original Warbirds Harvard

I think that Harvard ZK-WAR (ex NZ1092) was the one that started the NZ Warbirds movement when it was purchased by Trevor Bland in 1978.  It has recently been repainted into new warpaint that is not historically accurate but does tip its hat to its previous NZ1092 identity.

On take off showing RNZAF under its wing.

It also has a kiwi roundel but is in a pseudo US Navy scheme.

A couple of Ardmore based Stearmans flew a display in the early afternoon slot.

ZK-PJS "18" (c/n 75-4245) is a relatively recent import, being registered here in May 2013.

ZK-BOE2"77" (c/n 75-5064) has a much longer history in New Zealand being the original Warbirds Stearman that was imported by Len Cowper in 1982 and flown here as N4036.  Len took it to Hawaii for a time then re-imported it.  After a period of inactivity it was registered as ZK-JID on 27/11/98 and finally it was re-registered as ZK-BOE2 on 19/3/15.

During the third airshow slot between 3 and 4pm, it was the turn of the jets.  It was surprising to me how noisy they were.

 BAC Strikemaster Mk 88 ZK-NTY/NZ6370 (c/n 310)

De Havilland DH 112 Venom Mk 1 ZK-VNM3/WE434 (c/n 840).  It is painted up as an aircraft that was leased by the RNZAF in 1956 from the RAF Far East Air Force.

The Venom did a brief pass and departed, presumably for Wanganui.

Grayson Ottaway caught the Piper PA-28-151 Warrior II ZK-ELX (c/n 28-7715291) from the Aviation Training Ltd's Taupo operastion at Tauranga yesterday.
It got an earlier mention HERE
After its Bay Flight career it became part of Helipro Aviation Training from 23-01-2012 and then joined the current operator on 19-11-2014.
Below we have two pics from Hairy Mole Rat also taken at Tauranga yesterday.

NZ Warbirds BE 2e ZK-PXA

One of the main drawcards for me going to the NZ Warbirds Armistice Day Airshow at Ardmore last Sunday was to see their "new" BE 2e ZK-PXA

It is painted as RFC aircraft 687 which was the aircraft flown by Lt William Rhodes-Moorhouse in France in 1915.  Se my previous post at http://nzcivair.blogspot.co.nz/2016/11/nz-warbirds-armistice-day-open-day-at.html

As usual with TVAL built aircraft, the workmanship and finish are amazing.

Snapped today at Heli-Works at Tauranga Airport by Hairy Mole Rat was the MDHC 600N ZK-IJD (c/n RN029) of Amalgamated Helicopters NZ Ltd, to be based near Masterton.
As can be seen it still carries the 'Sherriff' and its fleet number '4' marks.

Inside a Couple of Hangars at Ardmore - 13-11-2016

While all the action was going on outside at the Warbirds Armistice Day Airshow, I managed a look into a couple of hangars where there were some interesting aircraft.

In the old Warbirds hangar, tucked off to the side, were DHC-1 Chipmunk ZK-SAX undergoing some engine work, and the Super Trojan ZK-TGN being repaired.  It seemed to my untrained-in-aeronautical-engineering eye that the damage to the Trojan was quite minor.

And in another hangar were the Miles Messenger ZK-CMM2, also undergoing engine work, and the Isaacs Fury ZK-DMN which has recently changed ownership to NZ Warbirds.

One week ago down at the Eastern end of Auckland International:

I managed a more complete (although pretty wide angled) photo of Israeli Aircraft Industries 1124A Westwind ZK-PJA tucked into the front of the Air Chathams hangar.  As noted previously it is registered to Aviation Services and Consultancy Ltd of Nelson and is ex ZK-RML.

Ronan Harvey's Wanaka based Beech D 18S N43927 was parked up, having returned from two and a half months flying around the Pacific.
