Happy New Year !
A quiet airfield at Pauanui today.
Cessna 172R Skyhawk ZK-TAD2 (c/n 17281546) has been with the Auckland Flying School since 26-03-2009.
The Cessna 172D Skyhawk ZK-CDS (c/n 17250524) has been around a little longer.
Imported new into NZ by Rex Aviation (NZ) Ltd and registered here on 11-09-1963 and first flying on the 26th for listing to the Piako Aero Club at Matamata on 11-10-1963.
Dave Lewer of Marton listed it from May of 1997 until selling to current owner Doug McMullin of Cambridge from 09-11-2015.
From Tuakau came the Aeroprakt A-22LS Foxbat ZK-JGT2 (c/n 079) as registered to S  T Growers from 05-12-2012.
This Piper PA-44-180 Seminole (C/n 44-7995156) was previously VH-MBV from September of 1988. It ferried in from West Australia on 13-11-2004 and became ZK-MBV with CTC Aviation Training (NZ) Ltd at Hamilton on the 22nd.
Its current operator since 21-06-2012 is the RNZAF Base Auckland Aviation Sports Club Inc.

Seldom seen outside is Pilot Brewery's Robinson R 22 ZK-ALE3 (not sure of the c/n), seen here in the Pilot Brewery warehouse at Te Kowhai.

The first ZK-ALE was a Miles Whitney Straight that was originally ZK-AGB and was impressed into the RNZAF as NZ577 during the war.  It was written off after crashing in the Mamakus in September 1953.  And the second ZK-ALE was the intriguing Colt AS105 HAAirship that was withdrawn at Auckland in December 1997.  Does anyone have a photo of it?

Pilot Brewery is a Te Kowhai based microbrewery that came to be after a big days local flying.  Its brews such iconic beers as Avgas Pilsner, Low Viz Pale Ale and Microlight Pale Ale.

Well I thought it was interesting.

Noted on the Western Grass at Christchurch International Airport on New Years Day was the Piper PA-31-310C Navajo C ZK-MJF.

It had ferried into Auckland from Pago Pago on 29-05-1994.
It began life as N325CF and spent time with Offerman and Co Inc at Minneapolis from August of 1979. It headed up to Canada and became C-GVEV with Kanata Aviation Ltd at Charlotte Town, Prince Edward Island in July of 1985 until joining Aerocharter Inc at Moncton, New Brunswick from October of 1993.
ZK-MJF (c/n 31-7912089) got its registration letters from its first NZ owner M John Funnell of Taupo on 16-06-1994.
It transferred to Helicopter Services (BOP) Ltd of Taupo on 27-02-2001 and spent time as the Waikato Air Ambulance; with a move to the New Plymouth Aero Club on 01-09-2011 as the Taranaki Air Ambulance.
Later in 2012 it was listed to the Taranaki Air Ambulance Trust (Taranaki Flight for Life).
From 27-02-2015 it has been listed with Skywest Aviation Ltd of New Plymouth and wears their titles on the lower engine cowlings.

During a visit to Auckland International last year, I photo'd PA 31 Navajo ZK-LWN (c/n 8112056) in the maintenance hangar where the Skyline Aviation/New Zealand Air Ambulance Service air ambulance fleet is hangared.  It has not been covered on the blog previously.

It is registered to Skyline Aviation Ltd of Napier and it has been with them since 29/11/04.

The aircraft was originally N40938 and was first registered in New Zealand on 16/6/95, to Skyline Aviation Ltd .  It has spent all of its New Zealand life in the Hawke's Bay, probably in an air ambulance role as in this photo of it as the Lowes Air Ambulance on 20/2/01.

Richard reports that it has been very quiet at Pauanui since New Year with only holiday residents doing circuits and short trips.
Today there were only four aircraft movements all day but one was the first visit of GA8 ZK-FSS.

Stark Aviation visit daily usually with 172 ZK-CWD or the other GA8 ZK-FSR, or both,  so it was good to catch the latest addition to their fleet.
Gippsland GA8 Airvan ZK-FSS2 (c/n GA8-02-017) was built as VH-AAP6  and registered to Gippsland Aeronautics at Latrobe Valley in Victoria on 31-07-2002.
On 29-08-2002 it was listed to Gary J Wight of Traralgon, Victoria.
It was then flown from Latrobe Valley to Nelson on 08-10-2002 for a NZ demonstration tour.
With its Australian registration cancelled on 10-11-2002 it became ZK-SAF2 with Air Safaris and Services (NZ) Ltd at Lake Tekapo on 14-11-2002.
It was sold to Stark Aviation Ltd of Hamilton in November and re-registered as ZK-FSS2 on 05-12-2016.

Weather looks good for the fly in on Saturday as long as the current SW winds ease.

Air Chathams Metroliner ZK-CID and its History

On one of my many taxi trips to Auckland International last year I photo'd Air Chathams Fairchild Metroliner SA 227AC ZK-CID3 (c/n AC692B) taxying for departure.

ZK-CID3 was registered to Air Chathams Ltd of Waitangi in the Chatham Islands on 27/4/16 as a re-registration of ZK-NSS.  ZK-NSS was purchased by Air Chathams from Airwork on 8/4/16.

ZK-NSS was previously N2707D and was first registered as such to the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation of San Antonio, TX in October 1987.  It later went to the UK where it was registered as G-BOJN for several owners and it was leased to Air Metro as in the photo below.,

It was first registered in New Zealand on 5/9/90 to Air Nelson.  It was never painted in the full Air Nelson colours but was painted as above in the photo from Wetland 831, taken at Nelson on 28/11/90.

It was sold to Airwork on 12/3/91 and was owned by various iterations of the company until it was sold to Air Chathams.  It is photo'd above in Air Post colours at Christchurch on 22/10/91.

In 1997 it was used by Airwork to set up Chatham Airlink in competition with Air Chathams but the service petered out in 1998.  It is photo'd above at the Chathams on 12/4/96 while on Charter from Airwork by Air Chathams.  Shades of what was to follow many years later...

In 1999 it was chartered from Airwork by Origin Pacific Airways on their passenger and freight services before the arrival of their BAE Jetstreams under a strategic alliance between the two companies.  It was not painted in Origin Pacific livery as seen in the above photo taken at Nelson on 25/6/99.

In 2003 ZK-NSS was configured as an air ambulance and painted in this very distinctive scheme for Life Flight, and was operated as "Life Flight 2" for the next 13 years.  It is photo'd above at Christchurch on 24/7/13.

Also at Christchurch, on 19/3/14, showing the large rear door for loading patients.

Thanks to Westland 831 of our sister blog 3rd Level New Zealand for a couple of the above photos.  There is a lot of further detail on ZK-NSS and Air Chathams on the 3rd Level New Zealand blog at:   http://3rdlevelnz.blogspot.co.nz/2016/04/another-metroliner-bites-dust.html

Pauanui 05-01-2017

A great day for activity and variety today at Pauanui with a group fly in from Ardmore.
Above is a panoramic view of some of the visitors.
L to R is Tiger Moth ZK-AUD, Fox Moth ZK-APT, Piper Cub ZK-BKW, Tiger Moth ZK-BLI, Cessna 177B Cardinal ZK-JDJ, Cessna Bird Dog ZK-NAM with Boeing Stearman ZK-PJS in behind.
The De Havilland DH82A ZK-AUD (c/n 83379 and DHNZ31) originally served with the RNZAF as NZ781 between 12-11-1940 and 14-03-1949.
On 03-02-1950 it became ZK-AUD with Aircraft Services (NZ) Ltd and fleet #3.
It was withdrawn in September of 1956 and then went to Weedair Ltd that December with parts  used in the rebuild of ZK-AUT.
Its registration was cancelled on 25-09-1957 and its mortal remains then passed through several hands before being restored as ZK-AUD on 06-06-2002 with Bob McNair of Clevedon.
ZK-BLI is c/n DHNZ128 and served as NZ1448 (hence the RNZAF serial on lower rear fuselage and the '48' on the engine cowling) from 10-10-1942 until 07-07-1955.
Its history can be viewed in an earlier post HERE
Yet to have its final colour scheme added is the Vans RV-7 ZK-DVS (c/n 73295) of Dean Voelkerling of Kamo.
This first flew on 10-06-2016 having been registered back on 14-09-2015.
This unmarked Cessna O-1F Bird Dog is ZK-NAM2 (c/n 24106) was built to a US Army order and given the serial 57-2928 and ultimately went to the Air Force of the Republic of Vietnam (and I guess wore the '57-2928' marks there).
It came on to the NZ register on 08-03-2002 with the NAM Syndicate of Papakura.
Tecnam P2008 c/n 036 takes the initials of its listed owners K and D Walker of Pukeatua to become ZK-KDW from 24-02-2012.

Air Chathams has filled a niche in the regional carrier market and they are quite visible at Auckland International airport.  They certainly operate the widest variety of aircraft types, including the following:

SAAB SF340A, Metroliner and Convair 580 coming and going.

SAAB SF340A ZK-KRA ( c/n 340A-065).

 Fairchild Metroliner SA 227AC ZK-CID3 (c/n AC692B).

and Convair 580 ZK-CIF2 (c/n 381).

 Ian Gibson Henry

On December 20th, 2016 aged in his 94th year, Ian peacefully passed away.

All who know Ian or fly behind his propellers are very welcome to come say farewell to Ian one last time please.

Ever since seeing Charles Kingsford Smith fly in NZ as a little boy, Ian had an incredible passion for aviation which he generously shared with one and all.
Ian worked with the National Airways Corporation, Airwork and the Canterbury Aero Club as an engineer.

After a visit to Oshkosh Ian specialised in and became a full time Propsmith and a strong Experimental Aircraft Association member and provided great support for New Zealand's Homebuilt, Replica and Microlight industries.

He made over 1,100 props for a wide range of aircraft and for hundreds of free flight models during his time as a long term core member of the Christchurch Model Aero Club.

If anyone in Christchurch or surrounds is free this Saturday afternoon the family would love to see you at the service.

I dropped in on Rangiora this morning hoping to maybe catch the new Savannah ZK-BIC.
But no luck.
It appeared to be hangar clean out or aircraft wash day.
Nothing new but some progress on two projects.
Cessna 180 ZK-BDE (c/n 30459) has been around since late 1953. It has been reported on these pages previously.
The Chilton DW1 ZK-CHT2 (elect) now awaits its lower engine cowling.
It will probably be a 'no show' at Omaka for Easter.
The New Zealand Aerospace CT/4B Airtrainer ZK-JMF (c/n 086) was out under the pre frontal gloom.
Locally based Ravensdown Aerowork Pacific Aerospace Cresco 08-750 ZK-LTB (c/n 022) sit drying after a wash down.
Wings now on and the engine is installed on the Graeme Main TEAM HiMax.

Todays report actually starts with a late departure from yesterday afternoon.
Heading home late yesterday (05-01-2017) was the De Havilland DH83C Fox Month ZK-APT (c/n FM48) which has featured previously HERE
For Friday the 6th it was nice to see the Niki Rotor Aviation Kallithea ZK-KTH (c/n 007) is getting out and about.
This was registered to Gyrate NZ Ltd of Mount Maunganui on 03-11-2016.

This Cessna 182P Skylane ZK-MGU (c/n 18263111) is a 1974 model that plied the Australian skies as VH-MHH from September 1974 until ferrying into Christchurch via Auckland and Norfolk Island on 19 and 20-09-1994.
It was registered to Gordon MacPhee as ZK-MGO1 on 01-11-1994. Gordon re-registered it as ZK-MGU on 11-08-1997 before selling it to the E C Mackintosh Trust of Taumarunui from 21-09-1998.
It was on sold to its current owner Tony Antonievich of Auckland on 30-01-2001.
To complete the picture Gordon imported a 1997 model Cessna 182R and registered it as ZK-MGO2 on 17-02-1998. This in turn became ZK-JCV3  in 2009.
A recent addition to our register is the Vans RV10 ZK-PHL (c/n 40388) for Phillip Anderson of Hawera from 08-08-2016.
It was built and registered to Chris McGough of Broome, WA as VH-ICY on 09-11-2007 and then on sold to M and T Smits Pty Ltd of Seymour, Victoria on 18-11-2009.
It ferried across the Ditch from Archerfield to Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island on 26-07-2016 and then on to Norfolk Island, Auckland and New Plymouth on the 27th.
Below is a shot of it as VH-ICY taken at Nhill by Richard Currie in October 2015.

An excellent fly in day at Pauanui today with a total of 103 aircraft counted on the field,  including summer visitors...
Here are just a few of them from Richard Currie.
Cessna 180A ZK-BVG (c/n 50068) was a Rural Aviation Ltd import in late 1957 and was delivered to James Aviation (RO) Ltd the following March and transferred to the Rotorua Aero Club from 30-08-1966 and then to Guyserland Airways Ltd on 21-01-1969.
It was fitted with floats but was badly damaged when it broke away from its mooring on 15-05-1973.
Its registration was cancelled on 29-08-1973.
L W Sutherland and E S Martin put it back together again and it was re-registered to them on 19-11-1976.

On 27-07-1987 it was listed to Frank Pike of Auckland and I believe it was set up for night sky advertising.
Its current owner, Bill Innes of Coromandel took it on from 12-11-2015.

The Czech Aircraft Works SportCruiser ZK-CSC2 (c/n 08Sc110) was registered to Lindsay Brown of Waihi Beach on 14-04-2008.
Cessna 172M Skyhawk II ZK-DRQ (c/n 17263507) first flew in NZ on 25-10-1974 and took up service with the Auckland Aero Club from 27-11-1974.
It joined its current listed owners - the DRQ Partnership of Hamilton - on 15-07-1994.
ZK-EKO2 is Tecnam P92S Echo with the c/n 465 which was first registered to the NZ agent Giovanni Nustrini on 27-06-2000 and  was also the first of the "S" models to arrive. Current owners are EKO Aviation Ltd of  Taupo.
Zenair CH701SP ZK-ESY2  (c/n 7-9844) was placed on the register on 06-07-2006 by David Clews of Hamilton only to be on sold a year later (12-07-2007) to Elani Nikoli, also of Hamilton.
Current owner since 10-06-2008 is A G van der Hulst of Te Awamutu.

ZK-LFP the Aeroprakt 22 LS (c/n 237) is the current Life Flight Green example which was registered on 03-07-2015.
Gyrocopters are starting to make their mark - numerically these days.
AuroGyro Cavalon ZK-RDY (c/n V00216) was registered to Aerosport Aviation Ltd of Cambridge on 07-09-2015.
Another Czech Aircraft Works SportCruiser on the field today was ZK-WGK (c/n SC700157) which was first registered back on 11-07-2008 with the I L and R M Manderson Trust of Whakatane.
The Aero Engine Services Ltd (AESL) Airtourer Super 150 ZK-DBD (c/n A551) actually began life as the Victa Airtourer 100 ZK-CGQ (c/n 71).
It was test flown in Australia on 05-08-1964 and sent over to Victa (NZ) Ltd of Auckland, registered ZK-CGQ on 17-09-1964 and delivered to the Auckland Aero Club on 20-11-1964.
It migrated down to the New Plymouth Aero Club but was damaged on 30-11-1969 and was stuck of the register on 04-02-1970.
It was rebuilt by Aero Engine Services Ltd at Hamilton as a Super 150, given the new c/n of A551 and re-registered as ZK-DBD on 25-02-1970 and first flew on the 28th.
It was delivered the same day - on hire - to the Canterbury Aero Club at Christchurch and carried the name 'The Grey Baron'.
On 15-05-1970 the Waikato Aero Club became the listed owner followed by Act Aviation of Te Awamutu from 19-08-1981. Thompson Motors (Te Awamutu) Ltd took it over two months later
It then went to the Wellington Aero Club on hire followed by a private hire at Balclutha before returning to Te Awamutu from 03-10-1986 with A C Thompson. It has been with the Thompson's ever since.
Another recent addition to our civil register is George Thompson's Bellanca 17-30A Viking 300 ZK-VIX (c/n 79-30944). This first flew from Parakai on 27-10-2016.

Of course Air New Zealand's all black Airbus A 320-232 ZK-OAB (c/n 4553) has been featured on the blog previously, but I was able to get it in a nice pose taxying for departure at Auckland International yesterday.  It has been in the fleet since 28/1/11.

It only twigged to me yesterday why it is registered out of sequence from all other Air New Zealand A 320s - I guess the OAB is for Our All Black (aircraft).  Am I correct?

A much quieter day today after yesterday’s fly-in.
SOCATA TB10 Tobago ZK-JIE (c/n 1306) spent its first ten or so years in Australia as VH-YTA  before ferrying in to Auckland International and Ardmore via Norfolk Island on

Cessna 182Q ZK-XLT (c/n 18266451) was built in 1978 and served three years in the States before spending the best part of nine years in Canada followed by three in Australia.
It powered into Wellington as VH-XLT on 17-12-1992 and became ZK-XLT on 28-01-1993 for Opiki Cropping Ltd of Wellington before going on line with the Wellington Aero Club from 18-05-1994.
