With 103 aircraft across at Pauanui things were pretty quiet at Ardmore last Saturday.  However, with a bit of poking around I photo'd Cessna 172N ZK-JAF2 (c/n 1727263) which has been around since 1993 but has not been posted on the blog previously.

ZK-JAF was previously VH-HHO and entered the New Zealand register on 5/11/93 for Mainland Air Services of Mosgiel.  It was registered to Drake Aviation Ltd of Rangiora for a short time between 4/5/98 and 28/7/98 when ownership transferred to the Waikato Aero Club at Hamilton.  Ownership then transferred to DW and MR Brown (Christian Aviation) of Takanini on 23/11/05.

After being inside the Airbus hanger at Ardmore for what seem's like months it was great to photograph Eurocopter EC135 P2+  HB-ZSW msn 1111 returning from an AMZ-Northland-AMZ flight late this afternoon. This smart looking 2013 built machine is operated by Calanda Wings AG / Wurth Leasing AG.

Chris Opperman was at North Shore last Saturday and captured a couple of really neat shots of Des Barry preparing for and aerobatic sortie in his Vans RV 7 ZK-DES3.

Des strapped in and ready to go with all the gear.  I reckon this is a great photo with the sky reflecting in his helmet and the instrument panel in the visor. The helmet is a customised Pilot X model from Bonehead Composites, as used by several Red Bull Air Race pilots.

On take off showing the aerobatics grid on the canopy.  Des is pretty serious about aerobatics!

Matt Hayes ventured up to the area North of Kaikoura on 08-01-2017 and captured these helicopters carrying out sluicing (and other) duties on the slips along State Highway 1.
The 'bucket dance'. Three AS 350's with their under-slung monsoon buckets -
- uplifting sea water to dump on the loose material on the slips.
The nearest Squirrel being the Fox Franz Heliservices Ltd's Eurocopter AS 350 B2 ZK-ICR (c/n 4225).

Precision Helicopters Ltd has been noted doing the 'mail run' to the isolated properties using their Hughes 369E ZK-HMO3 (c/n 0394E).
As seen at the top of the first photo above the Eurocopter AS 350 B3 Squirrel ZK-ITM (c/n 4735) of Action Helicopters Ltd is seen here at the refueling spot near Hapuku.
Just lifting off from the said refueling depot with under slung attachment is the Eurocopter EC 130 T2 ZK-IZK (c/n 8133) of Rotor Force NZ Ltd, down from Hastings.

A quick Rangiora stop today.

Finally I managed a reasonably uncluttered shot of the Zenith CH701 STOL SP ZK-DBC3 (c/n7-5464) awaiting delivery to James Herlihy of Patearoa.
Now three long lens shots.
Above Arnold poking about and doing his magic inside the Beech V35B Bonanza ZK-EDJ (c/n D-9224).
Meanwhile out in the pasture of long grass and borage the Robinson R22 Beta ZK-IWK2 (c/n 1789) from Way To Go Heliservices Ltd was distracting the grazing Piper PA-28 whilst (below) the Guimbal G2 Cabri ZK-HTQ3 (c/n 1071), as listed to Collective Support Holdings Ltd of Whakatane, was sneaking up from behind.
Back home after a busy few days away, including stops at Tauranga and the Pauanui fly-in, was Kevin Dore and his Alpi Aviation Pioneer 200 Hawk ZK-KPD (c/n 249-09).

Back at Garden City Helicopters base at Christchurch International Airport was see their Kawasaki BK117-B2 ZK-HJC3 (c/n 1061) arriving back - with the State Highway 1 flyover crossing Memorial Drive under construction in the background.
The white curvy thing is part of the "Welcome to Christchurch' archway which will sit over the completed bridge.
Speaking of construction - the Garden City Helicopters new base is making some progress in Grays Road.

There were three Navajos at Ardmore last Saturday.  Although they have been around for a long time in various guises, they have not been posted on the blog previously.

Piper PA 31 Navajo ZK-CUF (c/n 31-261) was built as N9194Y in 1968 by Piper Aircraft of Lock Haven PA.  It was the first Navajo registered in New Zealand, on 12/7/68.  It was registered to Tasman Air Services Ltd of Auckland and it first flew here on 10/10/68.  Tasman Air Services did not operate for very long, ceasing business in late 1969.  There is a lot of detail on Tasman Air Services on our sister blog 3rd Level New Zealand at http://3rdlevelnz.blogspot.co.nz/2010/07/tasman-air.html

The aircraft was sold to the Ministry of Transport, Civil Aviation Division on 6/1/70 and was re-registered ZK-DCE on the same day.  It then had a series of owners as follows:

Dalhoff and King Aviation Ltd, Ardmore  10-09-1979
T J Edmonds Ltd, Christchurch                   02-10-1979
Alpine Helicopters Ltd, Queenstown          17-03-1982
Whirl-Wide Helicopters Ltd, Timaru          19-04-1982
Airwork (NZ) Ltd, Christchurch                  30-03-1984
Rural Aviation (1963) Ltd, Auckland          30-04-1984

And finally to DW and MR Brown trading is Christian Aviation Ministries on 31/8/84.  It was again re-registered as ZK-CAM2 on 13/4/87 and is still registered with Christian Aviation, although it has not flown for some time and is minus its propellers and in the above photo.

The first ZK-CAM was a Bristol B 170 Freighter with SAFE Air between 1961 and 1981.

Also at the Christian Aviation base at Ardmore was their other Navajo:

Piper PA 31-350 Navajo Chieftain (c/n 31-7405241) was built in 1974 by Piper Aircraft as N54355 and was registered in Australia to Skyway Airlines of Wee Waa, NSW as VH-TWD on 13/9/74.  It had several other owners in Australia as follows:

Advanced Airlines,   Mascot, NSW            15-12-1978
Connair Pty, Alice Springs                           23-07-1979
Northern Airlines Pty Ltd, Alice Springs  18-06-1980
Ian Baillie Aircraft Sales, Essendon           04-03-1983

It was then sold to New Zealand and was registered to Airwork NZ) Ltd as ZK-EVD on 5/10/83 and then went to the Auckland Aero Club on 7/11/83.

It then had several owners including East Air Ltd of Napier from 25/2/85.  East Air went into receivership in December 1985 and the aircraft sat at Ardmore for some time.  The above photo was taken on 2/11/86 and is from our sister blog 3rd Level New Zealand.

Ownership transferred to Christian Aviation Ministries some time in 1986 and to the National Westminster Finance NZ Ltd on 12/2/87.

Finally ownership transferred to DW and MR Brown of Auckland on 6/3/87, and it was re-registered as ZK-CAL2 on 13/4/87.  It is still flying with Christian Aviation as in the above photo taken at Ardmore on 7/1/17.

The first ZK-CAL was a Bristol B 170 Freighter with SAFE Air between 1961 and 1981.

The third Piper Navajo at Ardmore last Saturday was the smart looking Australian registered VH-OOI3.  This aircraft has a New Zealand connection.

Piper PA 31-325 C/R (for counter rotating propellers) c/n 31-7912031 was built by Piper Aircraft as N27918 and was first registered in March 1979.  It had several US owners until it was cancelled on 26/10/89 and sold to Australia.  In Australia it was registered as VH-LDW to the Royal Flying Doctor Service at Jandakot, WA on 28/3/90 and it remained with them until being cancelled on 5/4/00.

It then came to New Zealand and was registered ZK-WSB for RJ Borrius-Broek of Christchurch on 10/4/00 (WSB stands for family members initials and Broek).

 ZK-WSB at Christchurch 8/11/01.

and again at Christchurch 29/8/02.

Ownership transferred to the Seachris Trust of Christchurch on 24/4/06 and they re-registered it as ZK-NOW2 on 17/5/06.  Air West Coast assumed ownership on 22/12/06 and then it went to Brick Securities of Auckland on 22/11/07, being mainly based in Christchurch and Timaru.  CD Andrew of Rangiora (Andrews Homes Ltd) took ownership on 18/2/14 and on 22/10/14 it was ferried from Timaru to Fielding for extensive restoration work (by Avcraft?).   While at Fielding ownership transferred to Cockles Pty Ltd of Albany WA on 17/6/15 and the New Zealand registration was cancelled on 20/8/15..

On the same day, 20/8/15, is was registered as VH-OOI3 at it flew from Kerkeri to Norfolk Island on 18/9/15.  On 11/1/16 ownership transferred to the Westpac Banking Corp but it is still operated by Cockles Pty Ltd of WA.  When I photo'd it at Ardmore on 7/1/17 it had South Pacific Resort Hotel Norfolk Island on the tail.  A nice looking aircraft.

According to Blue Bus's records, we have had more than 50 Piper Navajos on the New Zealand register so there are plenty more left to post!

In the latest - February 2017- edition of the Aeroplane Magazine there is this article (with a photograph) about the future of the resident Ardmore Bristol Freighter.

This Bristol 170 Freighter 31 NZM (New Zealand Military) is c/n 13135 and was registered to the Bristol Aeroplane Co Ltd on 10-04-1954
(and is said to have been allocated the UK civil registration of G-AMPK - but this had already been used by a Auster J5 in 1952 !)
In fact it was serial NZ5911 for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and it arrived at Whenuapai on 04-05-1954 and taken on charge by the RNZAF the following day.
RNZAF aircraft at this period used separate radio call signs to there serial number and NZ5911 was known as ZM-ZBN.
Below is a photo from the Des White collection showing NZ5911 with a silver fern on the middle of the roundel - date and site unknown.
It was place on the NZ civil register by the Air Department as ZK-BJP on 30-03-1955 and loaned to S.A.F.E. Ltd for just under a month before being returned to the RNZAF as NZ5911.
In January of 1974 NZ5911 was in Camouflage (not under wing) and has the red Kiwi in its roundel as captured below by CMM.
It was withdrawn from use at Whenuapai on 14-12-1977.
It along with seven others were flown to Ardmore and received NZ civil registration ranging from ZK-EPA through to ZK-EPH.
NZ5911 was allocated ZK-EPG and was marked up as such and can be seen below at Ardmore on 05-09-1979
Below we see here as at 09-08-1995 minus major components.
By  02-12-1993 it had been moved a little.
And as at 18-03-2000 it looked like this - below.
There are a more photos posted HERE  and scroll down a bit.

Bristol's remaining in NZ (that I know about) are NZ5903 at the RNZAF Museum Wigram; ZK-CLU at the Founders Museum at Nelson; ZK-CPT at Omaka; ZK-EPA at Awhiti and ZK-EPC near the Waitomo Caves

Thanks to Bargeldo1 for the heads up on this move.
Thanks also to the 'Aeroplane' magazine.
