Bristol B170 Freighter Mk31 Ex ZK-EPG at Ardmore 6-3-17

Today saw Bristol B170 Freighter Mk31 ex ZK-EPG / NZ5911 msn 13135 moved from it's long trem resting place in the Dwen Aeromotive Ltd compond at Ardmore to near the entry gates to the compound. This I assume is part of the process to get the aircraft ready for shipping it to it's new home in the UK. It has reportly been purchased by the Bristol Aero Collection Trust (BACT) and is destined for the Aerospace Bristol Museum at Filton in the UK. It will then become the only example of the type in the UK. I wonder when this aircraft was last moved ?

TL Ultralight TL 2000 Stings of New Zealand

TL Ultralight is an ultralight aircraft manufacturer from the Czech Republic that manufactures the TL range of aircraft which include the TL 2000 Sting, and TL 3000 Sirius (and the 2 seat tandem Stream, which we have not seen in New Zealand yet).

The TL 2000 Sting was developed from the TL 96 Star which first flew in November 1997, and the development of the Sting range has included the Sting Carbon, Sting RG and most recently the Sting S4 which 85% carbon fibre and was introduced in 2010.  The aircraft is all composite with a prominent bubble canopy that hinges forwards and is otherwise a conventional tri gear low wing side by side 2 seater.  I think it looks really nice.

The Sting's length is  6.45 metres (21 feet 2 inches), its wingspan is 9.12 metres (29 feet 11 inches) with the wing area being 119 square feet .  Empty weight is around 297 Kg depending on fitout (which includes a ballistic parachute for the S4), and MAUW is 544 Kg although this is increased to 600 Kg for an LSA.  Standard power for the S4 is a 100 HP Rotax 912iS but 912ULS and 914 engines can also be fitted, and cruise is up to 250 km/hr (155 mph) depending on the engine.

Our first Sting to be registered, on 21/1/03 was Phil L Richards' UL model ZK-PLR (c/n 02 ST 32).  It is photo'd above at the old Pikes Point airfield early on in its life.

Next up was ZK-VET (c/n 03 ST 39) that was registered to William J Henderson of Otane on 7/4/03.  It is photo'd above at the 2004 SAANZ flyin at Tauranga.

It was re-registered as ZK-STG2 on 17/6/04 and on 15/7/04 it was registered to the Afternoon Tea Club of North Harbour.  It is photo'd again at Tauranga, at the 2006 SAANZ flyin.  On 1/9/08 it was registered to the Afternoon Coffee Club of Albany and finally to Athol R Brown of Palmerston North on 11/4/10, with whom it is still current.  In fact all of our Stings are still registered but ZK-SLY is stored dismantled at North Shore airfield.

ZK-SLY (c/n 04/ST 100) is a retractable RG model and was registered to BG Massey of Auckland on 21/1/05.  It is photo'd at Pikes Point on 29/10/05.

Another Sting RG model that was imported around the same time was Peter H Woollett's ZK-PHW (c/n 04 ST 91) which was registered to Third Generation Ltd of Auckland on 3/2/05.  It is also photo'd at Pikes Point on 29/10/05.  It suffered a landing mishap at Silverdale but was repaired.  Ownership changed to Peter H Woollett on 31/3/14.

Sometime around 2014 Sport Aircraft Ltd of North Shore became the agents for TL Ultralight aircraft and they imported a Sting S4 (along with a Sirius) and registered it ZK-SAL5 (c/n 14 ST 411) on 13/5/14.  The S4 model is fitted with a Rotax 912iS engine and features a full glass cockpit and a ballistic parachute as standard equipment.  Its first flight was from North Shore airfield on 20/6/14.  It was sold to Robin G Willcox of Opunake on 2/4/15.

And our most recent Sting S4 was also imported by Sport Aircraft Ltd in the same container as a Sirius.  ZK-MTN (c/n 15 ST 422) was registered to Glenn N Martin of Christchurch on 27/3/15.  It first flew in New Zealand from North Shore airfield on 18/5/15.

I think we will see more Stings in New Zealand as they seem to be a nice plane.

MOTAT Update 11-3-2017 - Lancaster

It has been more than five years since I visited the MOTAT Aircraft Display Hall, so when I had a wet day occupying No 4 grandson, we took a ride on a MOTAT tram that ended up at the Meola Road site.  Said grandson (aged 5) then wanted to see the planes so who was I to refuse? (And he had a great time wearing a kids size flying jacket and "flying" a small yellow kids plane that was quite accurate in its controls and instruments - it is not something I would have taken notice of if I wasn't looking after a 5 year old).

The exhibits have been changed around a lot since my last visit however the Lancaster is still the first aircraft inside the hall.

MOTAT's Mk VII Lancaster has been repainted in the colours of the 75 (NZ) Squadron aircraft NE 181 "The Captain's Fancy".

"The Captain's Fancy" successfully carried out more than 100 bombing missions between May 1944 and May 1945 during WW 2 (the nose art shows 104 missions), which was quite remarkable as the average life of a Lancaster was 14 missions.

The squadron code is MJ-N and is quite hard to get at to photograph.

The aircraft was originally built as NX 665 in 1945 but was too late to see service in WW2.  It was stored until 1952 until being operated by the French Naval Air Arm as WU 13 on maritime patrol duties in East Africa and then in the South Pacific, and it was a visitor here in the early 1960s.  (see When WU 13 Came to Town ),  It was gifted to the people of New Zealand by the French Government in 1964 in recognition of the more than 6000 New Zealanders who served in RAF Bomber Command during the war, almost 2000 of whom died in action.

For scale, 5 year old grandson is standing in front of the Lancaster.  The aircraft looks pretty big in the Aviation Hall but in reality it is relatively small compared with the airliners that we take for granted today.

MOTAT Update 11-3-2017 - Mosquito

MOTAT's DH 98 Mosquito T 43 is still on display around the same spot as before.  This aircraft is painted as NZ2305.

This aircraft was built in Australia and came off the assembly line as A52-1053 after WW 2 had ended.  It was bought on charge by the RAAF on 6 August 1946 and stored before being sold to the RNZAF on 18 December 1946,  It was flown to Ohakea on 2 April 1947 by an Australian crew and again went into storage.  It was declared surplus in 1953 and sold to Mr Robin Coleman who stored it on his farm at Galpin's Line, near Marton, where it slowly deteriorated until being donated to MOTAT in 1967.

The fuselage was restored by MOTAT volunteers over many years and the wing was rebuilt by the RNZAF at Wigram.  The aircraft was completed by 2009 and has been on display in the Aviation Hall since it opened in 2011.  You can see more about the aircraft Here

Having recently been treated to a flying Mosquito in RNZAF colours, the roundel and tail flash are different on NZ2305.  They are the Australian Air Force WW 2 markings so maybe this was how it was when it was delivered and it never flew here in RNZAF colours?  Can anyone confirm or deny?

Ardmore Bristol Freighter get's RNZAF help 14-3-17

Yesterday afternoon (13/3) I noted two RNZAF truck's unloading equipment near the Bristol Freighter, this afternoon a further delivery was made, and RNZAF staff were working on the aircraft. I understand that the RNZAF are providing equipment and staff to help remove the aircraft's wings and to help prepare it for shipment to it's new home in the UK as a training exercise. While it will be sad in some way's to see this long term Ardmore resident depart it is good to know that it is going to a worthy final resting place.

Pinguino ZK-JJJ

General Avia was created by Stelio Frati in 1970 with the aim of developing and building new prototype designs.
One such was the General Avia Avia F.22R Pinguino.
This was a development of the fixed gear F.22 and has a similar appearance to that of the SIAI Marchetti SF.260.
We have had one example on our ZK register.
ZK-JJJ (c/n 021) was registered to General Avia South Ltd of Wellington on 11-02-1998.
It departed from Rome on 27th of February 1998, passed through Bankstown on the 14th March, and flew into Auckland on the 15th March 1998.
It was listed briefly with the Wellington Aero Club (Inc) from 01-09-1998 until returning to General Avia South Ltd on 03-02-1999.
About this period the registration of ZK-MDF was mooted for this aircraft but seemingly this was not taken up.
I photographed it (above) at Wanaka not long after sunrise on 10-04-1998 with a De Havilland product parked beyond and an early arrival on long finals.
It flew back to Australia and was captured above by David Eyre on display at the Australian International Airshow at Avalon on 20-02-1999.
Its NZ registration was cancelled on 14-05-1999 for it to become VH-PIQ on 21-06-1999 with Arena Aviation Pty Ltd at Archerfield, Queensland.
Ownership was transferred to Felice Di Napoli on 21-02-2000 - initially with a Kelburn, Wellington NZ address but soon of Paddington, Queensland.
Pic above shows it as VH-PIQ thanks to Mr Google.
Ownership was transferred to Hew Mills of Smithfield, Queensland on 13-09-2004
Then on 05-12-2014 it was listed to Wings Airborne Pty Ltd of Bondi, NSW.

On my way to Taumarunui I called in to Te Kowhai for a coffee.  It was pretty quiet but a couple of guys were around to have a coffee with and a couple of aircraft arrived:

The last ZK-SHL I saw at Te Kowhai was an Alpi!  This Cessna 172N is ZK-SHL5.  It is registered to a Wellington owner and has not been posted on the blog before.  The previous four ZK-SHLs were a Tecnam P96 Golf and three different Alpi Pioneer 300s.

And Noel Bailey arrived back after a training session in Tecnam P 96 Golf ZK-TEB2 (c/n 217).  It has been owned by Sport Aviation Corp Ltd of Hamilton since 24/1/14 and they are the sixth owner since it was first registered in September 2002..  SAC are one of the microlight governing organisations of New Zealand (the other is RAANZ).
