Auckland based Cessna 180K ZK-SLM arrived at Taumarunui in the afternoon of 15/3/17.  It had been shepherding the Tiger Club aircraft on their South Island trip for the last couple of weeks.

It carries the script " Cessna 180 II" on the nose which is just as well because I would be hard pressed to tell it apart from a Cessna 185.

On my trip back from Taumarunui I arranged to call in to see Bruce Belfield at his new location just outside Te Awamutu.  He had three Canadian Home Rotors Safari helicopters in his workshop - his own Safari 600 ZK-HXJ2, the Robinson R 22 cabined ZK-HIV2 and the latest one ZK-IEW.

ZK-IEW was registered to Colin Wade of Hamilton on 8/12/15.

In answer to Handbag's comment - your wish is my command!  Here is the Robinson R 22 cabined Safari helicopter ZK-HIV2 at Tokoroa on 18/11/11.  I understand that it is the only example in existence.

I have posted about it before in a post in November 2011.  But if anyone didn't remember this! - you can search the blog by typing in a registration or subject in the search box at the top left of the home screen and hitting search and it will bring up all posts that mention the rego or subject.  It's a pretty good resource now.

Continuing on my way back to Auckland from Taumarunui, I had a quick look at Hamilton Airport and although it was quite quiet at around 5 pm, the CTC Aviation operation seemed to be very busy.and I took these photos as the various aircraft taxied past or were tied down, over a 15 minute period.  Most of these aircraft have not been posted on the blog previously.

Diamond DA 20 ZK-CSH3 (C0462).  CTC have 14 DA-C1's 20s registered to them including the block ZK-CSA2 to ZK-CSI3.

Diamond DA 20 ZK-SFF2.

Diamond DA 20 ZK-CTC2.  I think that this would have been one of CTCs first aircraft, being first registered on 24/9/04.

Cessna 172S ZK-CTQ3.

Cessna 172S ZK-ZDM

Diamond DA 20 ZK-CSB2.

Cessna 172S ZK-CTZ3.

and Diamond DA 20 ZK-CSG3.

There were a lot of other CTC aircraft parked at the end of the day including more than four DA 42 Diesel Twinstars.  CTC have 8 registered to them.

CTC Aviation is a multi national company with bases in the UK and USA as well as Hamilton.  It has been owned by L3 Technologies since 2015.  L3 Technologies is a large American company that supplies command and control communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems and products to such customers as the the US Department of Defence, the Department of Homeland Security, US Government intelligence agencies and NASA.

The renamed annual Langley/Marshall Aerobatic Competition bought some exotic aircraft to North Shore airfield yesterday.

Pitts S1 ZK-EES of Darrell Brown from New Plymouth.

Darrell told me that Taranaki Flight Tech Ltd used to help him with engine work, but they stopped trading last year.
David Cranna flew his Zlin 50 LS  ZK-ZSO from Ardmore.

Yak 55M ZK-YKV was up from Tauranga, flown by Steve Geard.

David Wilkinson in his Vans RV 8 ZK-WLK taxies past little brother RV 3 ZK-WCO of Chris Schadler which was up from Whakatane.

Akrotech Giles G 202 ZK-NUT from Ardmore is back competing again.

Meanwhile, across the airfield, Glasair 2 RG ZK-NRG was being prepared for a flight to Taupo.  You can see some of the aerobatic aircraft in the distance parked outside the North Shore Aero Club.

The Departmental Apache ZK-BUA

For many years the Civil Aviation Administration operated a varied fleet of their own aircraft.
One of these was the Piper PA-23 Apache ZK-BUA.
As c/n 1137 it was built as N3199P in the US 1957-58 fiscal year before and was delivered to Airwork (NZ) Ltd at Christchurch and registered as ZK-BUA on 21-11-1957.
Here we have two shots of it at Wellington outside the CAA hangar with sister Apache ZK-BLO alongside and two RNZAF Devon's down by the Government hangar. The date was March 1963.
Below we have a nice colour shot of it parked beside the Bell Block (New Plymouth) Control tower.
It has dayglo vertical stabiliser and wing tips on an other wise standard factory paint scheme.
Photo comes from Jonathan Dick
CAA had several name changes over the years including the Department of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Transport (Civil Aviation Division).
Below we see it with 'Ministry of Transport' along the side.
And the same scheme below as at September 1969.
Parked outside the East Aviation hangar beside the Wellington Aero Club building.
Looks like it could be Keith Trillo's Avian ZK-ACM in the hangar.
At Paraparaumu below, on 13-11-1970, outside the Calibration Flight hangar.
It was snapped at Palmerston  North on 08-12-1972 in a new scheme with Ministry of Transport above the cabin and CIVAIR on the tail with the MOT logo above.
Yes I have flown this one - and it has no connection with this CIVAIR Blog site name.
And then a colour view outside the old Canterbury Aero Club rooms, hangar and workshop in September of 1973.
Ownership was transferred back to Airwork (NZ) Ltd on 13-02-1974 and in October of 1974 I snapped it again outside the Canterbury Aero Club facility.
Now minus all reference to MOT/CIVAIR and a change of tail colour.
Airwork on sold it to W Sneddon of Nelson from 17-05-1976 who in turn moved in on to Brian Telford of Waiwera South from 12-10-1976.
Photo below at Ardmore on 09-08-1985.
B  H Taylor of Auckland took it over from 15-10-1985 with it going on line with the Airline Flying Club.
Addition owners include Mike Pemberton of Wellington from 11-07-1989. It was Paraparaumu based and is seen in its hangar in the three shots below.

The above three shots were taken by Jonathan Dick who used to clean and polish the aircraft for its owner.
It is seen below at Warbird over Wanaka in April of 2000.
Ownership moved to Peter Henwood of Christchurch from 10-05-1991; until it was transferred over to Air Canterbury Ltd at Christchurch from 29-03-1994.
Then it was back again to Peter Henwood from 17-03-1995.
Next up was the Rankin Partnership of Ohakea from 20-10-1996
Followed by the North Shore Aero Club (Inc) from 17-11-2001 with David Cowie and Stan Smith involvement.
It is seen in the two shots below outside Stan's hangar at North Shore on 06-03-2008.

Final listed owner is the Apache Syndicate of Albany from 01-07-2010
Below Keith Morris caught it at North Shore on 29-07-2014.

Finally :- Seen at North Shore by Magnaman on 06-06-2015.

Three photographs from todays large contingent of visitors at Pauanui.
Cessna 172L 'Superhawk'ZK-DFG (c/n 17260091) began its NZ career with the Waikato Aero Club in 1972.
It was re-engined with an O-360 to become a 'Superhawk' back in the last century.
As Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawks go ZK-MBZ (c/n 38-81A0062) is a late arrival in NZ.
It was first listed here on 30-07-2008 and joined the RNZAF Base Auckland Aviation Sports Club Inc in October of 2010.
The Cessna U206F Stationair ZK-RPM is c/n U20602042.
Of 1976 vintage it came to NZ via Australia to become ZK-TAM for the Tauranga Aero Club in November 1992.
Five operators later it joined TAM Flight Ltd of Mount Maunganui on 02-12-2011 and was re-registered by them as ZK-RPM on 14-11-2012.

Zlin Aviation Shock Cub ZK-EUP

Jean 210 was at Kaipara Flats airfield on 19/3/17 and photo'd Tim Harrison's new Shock Cub.  The Shock Cub from Zlin Aviation is a majorly re-worked Savage Cub for the extreme STOL market.  Why it is a Shock Cub is explained in rather flowery language on the Zlin website in that: 1. It will shock afficionados of this type of aircraft, and 2. It will pleasantly shock with its features and performance (I said it was flowery!).

The main differences from the Savage Cub are in the undercarriage which is a totally new design with long travel shock absorbers and big tyres, and the all new wing which is claimed to have a "hyper STOL profile", and has double slotted flaps.  An optional extra are fixed carbon-fibre slats and ZK-EUP is fitted with these, as can be seen.

The performance focuses on STOL with a claimed minimum flight speed (one up) of 18 mph!  and again with one up the landing roll is claimed to be 18 metres!

ZK-EUP2 (c/n 338) was registered to Sports Aircraft New Zealand Ltd of Wellsford on 27/2/17.  The first ZK-EUP was a CT 4 Airtrainer that went to the RAAF.

A quick visit to Rangiora on Friday the 17th - St Patricks Day -found this little beauty in the circuit.
Taylor JT-1 Monoplane ZK-DKQ (c/n AACA/125) was first registered on 06-03-1975.
It was involved in an accident on 15-02-1976 and eventually returned to the register on 26-01-2007.
See previous posts on the aircraft Here and Here
Ownership passed to Alex Shadbolt of Pegasus on 18-01-2017.

We did an earlier post on the Piper PA-28-140 Cherokee Cruiser ZK-DUW (c/n 28-7525033)
See Here
Below we see a shot of ZK-DUW at Pudding Hill on 25-01-1981.
After being withdrawn in about mid-2013 with over 33,000 hours, it was dismantled and stored in the Canterbury Aero Club hangar, along with several others for a period.
Then it was removed - placed in a container.
And now we see two shot of her as 4R-MDE with Openskies Flight Training of Ratmalana Airport in Sri Lanka.

Two of the other Piper PA-28's ex Canterbury Aero Club are also on line at Ratmalana.
ZK-EBM is  now 4R-MDG and ZK-EBV is 4R-MGF.
I belive several of the flying staff at Openskies were trained at the Canterbury Aero Club.

I did a quick circuit of Rangiora today and captured the following.
Newly registered to the ZK-ADM Syndicate of Christchurch on 06-03-2017 is this Yakovlev Yak-52 ZK-ADM2 (c/n 833601). It is ex RA-3490K.
Of 1983 vintage it has been parked up in Italy having only flown fifteen hours since a factory re-manufacture ten years ago.
That is Yak-52 ZK-YRA in the background.
A very frequent visitor from Cust is Tony Den Haan in his ICP Savannah S ZK-BIC2 (c/n 14-11-54-0358). A long shot on final.
A much, much rarer visitor is the Piper PA-28-160C Cherokee C ZK-CNY (c/n 28-4097)) which has been with Brett Cooper of Gisborne since late 1997.
It was initially operated by the Marlborough Aero Club from 1967 before going private in 1974.
The Chilton DW1 ZK-CHT2 is coming along nicely - thank you - with the engine cowls well under way.

In a less than ideal day gray and misty day at Hamilton, Richard Currie captured these two aircraft for our blog - neither of them having appeared previously.
The Cessna 172M Skyhawk II ZK-DXP (c/n 17265333) was imported by Rex Aviation (NZ) Ltd for the Taumarunui Aero Club who took it over in September of 1975. It only lasted a year before being bent after which it was rebuilt by Dalhoff and King of Dunedin.
Some fifteen owners later it was taken up by Steve Hampton of Hamilton in May of 2011.
A recent addition to our register is this Diamond DA 42 ZK-SHB (c/n 42.354) which was registered to Air Hawkes Bay Ltd of Hastings on  07-03-2017.
This airframe along with two others (VH-FGO and VH-FNV) where trucked into Aeromotive at Hamilton Airport on 25-10-2016.
